The Dutch Marquise is defined by its elongated outline and two pointed ends. When selecting a stone, three factors determine how it will look and wear in a finished piece.

 

Ratio: A length-to-width ratio of 1.85–2.10 gives the marquise its correct proportion. Outside this range, the stone reads either too narrow or too short for the shape.

 

Cut quality: Symmetry and depth across the stone determine light return and control the visibility of the bow-tie shadow that can appear across the centre of an elongated cut. This is the single most important factor in how the diamond performs, more so than carat weight alone.

Some jewellers apply additional metal coverage (V-prongs or protective tips) specifically to address this.

Can two lab grown marquise diamonds with identical certificates still perform differently in a ring?
