Ratio: A length-to-width ratio of 1.85–2.10 gives the marquise its correct proportion. Outside this range, the stone reads either too narrow or too short for the shape.
Cut quality: Symmetry and depth across the stone determine light return and control the visibility of the bow-tie shadow that can appear across the centre of an elongated cut. This is the single most important factor in how the diamond performs, more so than carat weight alone.
Certification: Every Dutch Marquise is graded independently by IGI or GIA against the 4Cs — cut, colour, clarity, carat — with a full report provided at point of sale.
Carat: for carat, the marquise shape has greater surface spread than round or cushion cuts, which affects how it should be sized against the setting you have in mind.
The marquise cut is prone to specific flaws that are not always visible without close inspection: unevenness between the two wings, where one side curves more than the other and breaks the symmetry of the outline; blunted or off-centre points, which weaken the tip and increase the risk of chipping once set; and an off-centre culet, which throws the face-up symmetry off even when the outline looks even. Dutch Marquise refers to a specific style of marquise cut, typically featuring a slightly fuller, rounder outline and a higher crown than the standard marquise shape. In lab grown stones, this cut is applied to rough grown via CVD or HPHT, with the same proportions and shaping standards used regardless of origin.
Carat weight measures how heavy a diamond is, not its physical dimensions, so two lab grown stones of the same weight can have different lengths and widths. Length-to-width ratio changes how that weight is distributed across the stone. A higher ratio (closer to 2.10) spreads the weight further along the length, making the stone appear larger face-up than a shorter, wider stone of the same carat.
Depth percentage has a stronger effect on elongated cuts than on round stones, because light travels a longer path across the length of the diamond. This applies equally to lab grown stones. A depth outside the ideal range increases the likelihood of a visible bow-tie, even when the ratio itself is correct.
This happens when the two long sides of the stone aren’t cut as true mirror images of each other, usually due to rough shape limitations or cutting error during faceting. It’s unrelated to growth method and affects how symmetrical the stone looks face-up, independent of carat, colour or clarity grade.
The pointed ends have a narrow angle and less surrounding material than the rest of the stone, making them more prone to stress fractures during setting or from impact afterward, regardless of whether the diamond is lab grown or mined. Some jewellers apply additional metal coverage (V-prongs or protective tips) specifically to address this.
Yes. A certificate confirms cut, colour, clarity, carat and growth method, but doesn’t capture wing symmetry, point sharpness or culet centring in enough detail to predict visual performance. Physical or video inspection alongside the certificate is worth doing for elongated cuts.
A Dutch Marquise typically has a fuller, rounder outline and a higher crown compared to a standard marquise, which is cut with a flatter profile and sharper points. The difference is in proportion and shaping style rather than the underlying cutting method.
Solitaire and hidden-halo settings are common choices, as they keep focus on the stone’s outline. East-west settings, where the stone sits horizontally rather than point-to-point along the finger, are also used to highlight the fuller shape.
It can be used for any setting. The fuller outline and higher crown often work well in earrings and pendants, where the stone is viewed face-on rather than from the side.
