What is a green sapphire?

When I say sapphire, you’ll probably think of something that looks like this:

The word sapphire even means blue ( Derived from the old Greek word for blue Lapis Lazuli ‘Sappheiros’ ) But did you know the majority of sapphires are white, because they don’t have any trace elements inside which give them colour.


Sapphires, like rubies, are a variety of the mineral corundum, which is an extremely hard, naturally occurring crystalline form of aluminium oxide.


Green sapphires get their colour from trace amounts of iron within their crystal structure. The presence of iron particles influences how light refracts through the stone, producing a broad spectrum of green hues. In combination with other trace metals, these elements produce a refined palette of greens, ranging from delicate yellow-green at the lighter end to a warmer, medium yellowish-green.

At Flawless, we source our green sapphires from Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and Australia — though the gem is also found in Tanzania, Thailand, and the United States.


Each country's unique geology means no two sources produce quite the same mineral mix, and therefore no two produce quite the same colour. Sapphires from Australia and Thailand, for example, generally carry a higher iron content, giving them a deeper, richer green. Australian stones in particular are renowned for their parti-coloured look — a single stone showing two or more colours within it.

Why Madagascar Stands Apart

Of all these origins, the best quality green sapphires come from Madagascar. What sets them apart is their exceptional saturation and clarity. Many specimens emerge from the ground with excellent natural colour. A subtle touch of blue, a hint of yellow, and a soft, silky quality within the stone.

Mined by Hand

Madagascar's gem trade is largely artisanal, with many stones hand-mined by small-scale, independent miners rather than large industrial operations. For jewellers and buyers who care about provenance, this adds a layer of narrative, a sapphire that can be traced back to the individual hands that brought it out of the earth.

How to choose green sapphires

Grading Green sapphires is a little different from diamonds, because of their unusual colour profile, we don’t apply the four C’s. Here’s what to look for.

Colour

Colour in a green sapphire comes down to balance. The most sought-after stones aren't too dark, and lean green rather than yellow. A touch of yellow or blue is normal, but once blue starts to dominate, the stone shifts into teal territory rather than green.


Pure green is rare. Most green sapphires carry a secondary colour, showing up as a hint of yellow or blue alongside the base green.


Colour is broken down into three categories;

Hue  Tone   Saturation


Hue

Hue is the primary, basic spectral colour of a gemstone.


Pure green tones or slightly bluish-green hues are the most desirable, with yellowish or brownish undertones considered to be lower quality.


Silk refers to fine, needle-like rutile crystals that form naturally within a sapphire as it grows, tiny threads trapped inside the stone, visible as a soft, fibrous texture rather than a clear flaw.


Hue doesn’t just refer to the colouring mineral in gemstones, it's about how light travels through it. 


The colour of the stone actually changes based on how much light can go through it.


A touch of silk scatters that light in subtle ways, adding soft complexity rather than dulling the stone. Too much silk and it turns hazy or muddy; too little and you lose that extra dimension. It's a small window (around that 20% mark) where silk becomes a flavour, not a flaw.

Tone

Unlike emeralds, where deep, rich colour is prized, green sapphires are at their best in a medium tone — not too dark, not too light. This is the sweet spot most buyers are searching for, where the green feels alive and saturated without becoming heavy or dull.

Saturation

Strong, even saturation is the goal. You want the colour to carry consistently through the stone, without light or dark patches breaking up the tone. A well-saturated green sapphire with even colour distribution is what brings all three of these qualities together


Unlike ruby or blue sapphire, where the market converges on a narrow band of prized colour, green sapphire's appeal is rooted in its vast array of unique shades and colours.


The colours can be mixed, some might like green with yellow, green with blue


The clearest example is the Australian Bi-parti sapphire. Untreated stones in which discrete zones of blue, green, and yellow sit side by side within the same crystal, rather than blending into a homogenous colour.

Cut

A well-cut gemstone comes down to symmetry, precise facet alignment, correct proportions, and a flawless surface polish. When these elements come together, the cut does its real job: drawing out the stone's fullest colour and brilliance

Clarity

Inclusions affect how the hue of green sapphires reads to the eye. A stone with around 10–20% silk content, paired with good underlying colour, often shows a depth and character a completely clean stone lacks. Its important to remember this when assessing the clarity of a green sapphire, and how it relates to colour, more specifically the hue.

Green sapphires v emerald

Emeralds belong to the beryl family, while sapphires are corundum. Sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond, making it highly scratch-resistant and ideal for everyday wear. Emerald sits at 7.5–8 and is naturally more prone to inclusions and fractures, so it needs gentler handling.


The colour goals differ too: emerald is judged against one classic, medium-toned green, while sapphire spans such a wide range that there's no single shade buyers chase.


This is where dichroism comes in, a form of pleochroism where a gemstone shows different colours depending on the viewing angle, caused by light being absorbed differently along the crystal's axes. Both corundum and beryl are uniaxial, so each shows two colours rather than three.


Depending on the cut, a sapphire can appear violet-blue from one angle and greenish-blue from another. Green sapphires are known for particularly strong dichroism, visibly shifting between two shades of green as the stone is rotated. Emerald shows the same effect, but more subtly — a soft shift between blue-green and yellow-green that's harder to spot with the naked eye.

What is the difference between teal sapphire and green sapphire?

Teal sapphires lean towards bluish green.


Predominantly blue, with a secondary green influence strong enough to give the stone real depth and complexity, without tipping over into true green territory. Think of it as a cool, oceanic blue carrying a distinct undertone of green.


This depth of tone is closely tied to iron content: generally, the more iron present in the crystal, the darker and more saturated the stone appears. Heat treatment doesn't remove that iron. It alters its oxidation state and interaction with light, which is what lightens the visible colour and can improve clarity. This is how many beautifully lightened, heat-treated teal sapphires come onto the market.

Green sapphires rarity and durability

Again, green sapphires are essentially corundum, which isn’t rare at all. But gem quality corundum is exceptionally rare, and untreated green sapphires are the most desirable.


The chemistry behind green sapphires explains why they're so rare. Iron needs to be present in exactly the right concentration, too little and the stone pulls yellow, too much and it browns out or tips toward blue-black. Less than one percent of all sapphire rough qualifies as truly green, and finding that pure colour in an unheated stone of two carats or more is exceptional.


Clean, unheated stones with well-saturated green and around 10–20% silk are among the most sought-after in the coloured gemstone market. 


Green sapphires are also frequently mistaken for emeralds, particularly the darker stones from Australia, but the two couldn't be more different in wearability. Emeralds are notoriously prone to inclusions and chipping, needing careful handling and often oil treatment to mask fractures. Sapphire, by contrast, is corundum — the second-hardest natural mineral on Earth, at 9 on the Mohs scale. Where an emerald asks for gentle care, a green sapphire is a stone built to be worn and loved for a lifetime.

Are Green Sapphires treated?

Treatments are human-enhanced processes used to improve a gemstone's colour and clarity. If a stone is described as "heated" or "treated," it's been enhanced from its natural state to look better in jewellery.


Heat treatment is by far the most common method for green sapphire. it lightens dark, closed-in colour and opens up the stone's transparency. Around 90–95% of all sapphires are heat-treated; untreated stones are rare and command a premium.


Silk tells the story. Fine rutile "silk" inclusions melt under high heat, which is part of why heating lightens a stone. Crisp, un-melted silk points to an unheated stone, while melted or "burnt" silk reveals heat has been applied, making the inclusions a kind of fingerprint of the stone's history.


Common treatments


➤ Heat treatment — the industry standard; lightens colour, improves clarity.


➤ Diffusion — introduces elements like beryllium under heat to alter colour, sometimes only at the surface. Less desirable.


➤ Fracture filling — fills cracks with glass or resin to improve apparent clarity. Least desirable, with poor durability

Are green sapphires expensive?

Green sapphires in our collection begin from approximately £1,050 for smaller feature stones, with exceptional, rare, or highly significant sapphires reaching into the tens of thousands. Most stones under 1ct sit around the £1,050 mark, while 1–2ct sapphires typically range from £2,050 to £3,700 depending on colour, clarity, cut and overall rarity. Larger stones in the 3–6ct range generally fall between £6,800 and £13,150+, with particularly fine examples climbing higher still.


Green sapphire pricing follows a curve rather than a straight line. At the entry point, smaller and lightly included stones start from around £520 — an accessible way into genuine, natural green sapphire. From there, price climbs steadily with carat weight: a clean 3–5 carat stone typically sits between £5,170 and £7,755, while eye-clean stones in the 5–9 carat range move into the £7,755–14,685 bracket.


The real jump happens at the top end. Stones above 8 carats can command anywhere from £10,650 up to over £54,000, reflecting just how rare a large, well-coloured green sapphire really is. Every extra carat at this level represents a stone that's exponentially harder to find in nature.


Clarity plays its part too. Two stones of near-identical size can differ by thousands of pounds depending on whether they're graded Eye Clean or Slightly Included.

Green sapphires are one of nature's quiet masterpieces, formed over millions of years under extraordinary pressure, in exactly the right conditions, to produce a colour so rare that under one percent of all sapphire rough qualifies as truly green.
